Netflix IPO
About Netflix IPO
Netflix went public on May 23, 2002 at 15 per share. The company had started as a DVD rental by mail service in 1997. Netflix stock fell below 5 during the dot com aftermath but recovered spectacularly as it pivoted to streaming. Netflix pioneered binge watching by releasing entire seasons at once. Its investment in original content like House of Cards and Stranger Things transformed it from a distributor to a studio. Netflix disrupted Blockbuster, which rejected a 50 million acquisition offer in 2000. Netflix stock has returned over 40,000 percent since its IPO.
