Microsoft had dominated personal computer software since IBM chose MS-DOS in 1981. The company later pivoted successfully to Windows and Office. Microsoft stock split nine times. A single share at the IPO price would be worth millions today. Microsoft became the most valuable company in the world during the 1990s, was passed by Apple, then regained the top spot during the AI boom.
