Alibaba went public on the New York Stock Exchange on September 19, 2014, raising 25 billion, the largest IPO in history at the time. The stock opened at 92.70, up 36 percent from the 68 offer price. Founder Jack Ma, a former English teacher, became the richest person in China. Alibaba dominated Chinese e commerce. The IPO valued Alibaba at 231 billion, more than Amazon at the time. Alibaba later faced regulatory crackdown under the Chinese government, losing over 600 billion in market value. Ma disappeared from public view for months after criticizing regulators in 2020.
