About Volkswagen Short Squeeze

In October 2008, Volkswagen briefly became the most valuable company in the world during a massive short squeeze. Porsche had been secretly accumulating VW shares, revealing it controlled 74 percent of voting rights. Hedge funds that had shorted VW believing the stock would fall were forced to buy at any price. VW stock rose from 200 to over 1,000 euros in days, briefly exceeding 1,000 billion dollars in market cap. The squeeze destroyed billions in hedge fund losses. It was one of the most dramatic short squeezes in market history, occurring during the height of the 2008 financial crisis.
