About Euro Introduction

The euro was introduced as an accounting currency on January 1, 1999, and as physical notes and coins on January 1, 2002. Eleven countries initially adopted the euro. It was the largest currency changeover in history. The eurozone grew to 20 countries. The euro became the second most held reserve currency after the dollar. The conversion required replacing 14 billion banknotes and 52 billion coins. The euro eliminated currency exchange costs within the eurozone and made prices transparent across borders. Critics argue it deprived countries of monetary policy flexibility, contributing to the later Greek debt crisis.
