NYSE Electronic Trading
About NYSE Electronic Trading
The New York Stock Exchange, long a bastion of floor traders and specialists, embraced electronic trading with the launch of NYSE Hybrid Market in 2006. The change was forced by competition from electronic exchanges like NASDAQ and ECNs. The Hybrid Market allowed electronic execution while preserving some floor trading. The transformation was part of the NYSE merger with Archipelago in 2006 and Euronext in 2007. The COVID 19 pandemic in 2020 nearly shut the floor entirely, accelerating electronic migration. The era of shouting floor brokers and hand signals was replaced by servers and algorithms. The NYSE floor remains partly for ceremonial purposes and opening and closing auctions.
