London Stock Exchange
About London Stock Exchange
Founded in 1698 when John Castaing began posting stock and commodity prices at Jonathans Coffee House. The exchange formally moved to its own building in 1801. The LSE became the center of global finance during the 19th century, listing railway, mining, and colonial companies. It was the first exchange to use electronic trading for some equities in 1986 as part of the Big Bang deregulation. Today the LSE is one of the largest exchanges globally. The Big Bang of 1986 transformed it from a closed club of gentlemen brokers to a modern, computerized, global marketplace.
