The most devastating stock market crash in American history. After a decade of speculation known as the Roaring Twenties, the Dow Jones peaked at 381 on September 3, 1929. On October 24, Black Thursday, the market fell 11 percent at the opening bell. October 28, Black Monday, saw a 13 percent drop. October 29, Black Tuesday, saw another 12 percent loss with 16 million shares traded. By July 1932, the Dow had fallen 89 percent to 41. The crash did not cause the Great Depression but was a major trigger. It took 25 years for the market to recover to its 1929 peak.
