Tulip Mania
About Tulip Mania
A speculative bubble in Dutch tulip bulb prices that collapsed in February 1637. At its peak, single bulbs sold for the price of Amsterdam canal houses. Tulip Mania is often cited as the first recorded speculative bubble in history. Prices rose 20 fold in January 1637 and collapsed in February. The aftermath was relatively mild for the broader Dutch economy, though many individual traders were ruined. The term tulip mania has become a metaphor for any large economic bubble.
