About Tokyo Stock Exchange

The Tokyo Stock Exchange was established on May 15, 1878. It became the largest exchange in the world by market capitalization during the Japanese bubble of the late 1980s, surpassing New York. After the bubble burst, the Nikkei declined for two decades. The TSE implemented electronic trading in 1999. The exchange merged with the Osaka Securities Exchange in 2013. A major trading glitch in October 2020 halted all trading for a full day, the worst system failure in TSE history. The Nikkei finally surpassed its 1989 peak in February 2024, after 34 years. The TSE remains the largest exchange in Asia.
