About Shanghai Stock Exchange

The Shanghai Stock Exchange was re established on November 26, 1990, after a 41 year hiatus following the communist revolution. It grew rapidly, with the Shanghai Composite reaching 6,092 in October 2007 before crashing. The exchange has been volatile, with retail investors dominating trading. Foreign access is limited through the Stock Connect program with Hong Kong. China relaxed restrictions on foreign investment but maintains capital controls. The Shanghai exchange lists many state owned enterprises alongside private companies. Regulatory interventions, such as the 2015 crash response, have sometimes created more uncertainty than stability.
