About Creditanstalt Collapse

The collapse of Creditanstalt, Austrias largest bank, in May 311 triggered a European banking crisis. Creditanstalt had hidden enormous losses from the 1929 crash. When revealed, bank runs spread from Austria to Germany and then to Britain. The Bank of England abandoned the gold standard in September 1931. The Creditanstalt collapse demonstrated how interconnected European banking had become. The crisis deepened the Great Depression in Europe and contributed to political radicalization. Germany experienced banking crises in 1931 that increased support for the Nazi Party. The Creditanstalt event is a historical warning about the dangers of hidden bank losses and financial contagion.
