Bernanke Helicopter Money
About Bernanke Helicopter Money
In November 2002, Federal Reserve Governor Ben Bernanke gave a speech about preventing deflation. He referenced Milton Friedmans idea that the government could drop money from helicopters to stimulate spending. Bernanke was called Helicopter Ben. The speech argued that the Fed could always generate inflation if needed through unconventional means. As Fed Chairman during the 2008 crisis, Bernanke implemented these ideas through quantitative easing. The helicopter money concept returned during COVID 19 in 2020 when governments sent checks directly to citizens. Bernanke received the Nobel Prize in 2022 for his research on banks and financial crises. His academic work on the Great Depression informed his crisis response.
